Karen Blixen Museum

Karen Blixen House was once the centerpiece of a farm at the foot of the Ngong Hills in Kenya. The farmhouse gained international fame with the release of the movie ‘Out of Africa’, which was based on Karen Blixen’s autobiography of the same name. The Museum is located just 10km from Nairobi center and is open to the public every day including weekends and public holidays.

The house itself holds some original furnishings and props used during the filming of the movie. Visitors are welcome to take photos of the grounds and can visit the museum shop which offers Kenyan handcrafts, books, posters and postcards of the movie ‘Out of Africa’, and other souvenirs of interest.

While originally purchased as a 4500 acre farm, the land has been subsequently sold and developed by 20 acre parcels. The surrounding community still pays homage to Ms Blixen as the suburb is now known as ‘Karen’. While visiting, you may witness a wedding or corporate event as the grounds are available for hire.
