Masai Mara national Reserve

Masai Mara Game Reserve

The Masai Mara is regarded as the favorite and most popular game reserve in Kenya, hosting over 140,000 visitors each year. The reserve lies approx 270km southwest of Nairobi and covers an area of approximately 1500sq km, bordering the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The landscape is primarily open savannah grasslands and acacia scrub land.

Starting anytime from late July, the wildebeest and zebra migratory herds follow the rains in search of greener pastures. They start to cross over the Tanzanian border into ‘the Mara’, as the Masai Mara is often known. The herd may sometimes be late, but they will always make the trip, driven by dry conditions in the south Serengeti and led by the lightning and thunderstorms in the north Masai Mara. Come November, they start the homeward journey as they sense the rains coming in the Serengeti and surge back to the southern part of the Serengeti, where they will have their young in the new year.

Safaris-R-Us recommends adding Masai Mara Game Reserve to itineraries in August, September and sometimes (depending on the season) October. Let us know if you would like to include the Mara in your safari itinerary.
